So much for the calm and steady hand of leadership the country was supposedly craving after four years of President Trump.
According to a new CNN poll, 75% of Democratic voters are saying “no thanks” to another Biden run in 2024. Part of that is surely due to the President’s age and a natural desire to see new blood, but another part must also be the terrible state of affairs Biden’s policies have left the country in.
Democrats up and down the ballot are far more vulnerable in 2022 than they would be without Biden’s numerous bungles meaning he’s hurting the party overall, not just his legacy.
The most common reason for ditching Biden has to do with his perceived inability to win re-election regardless of who Republicans nominate:
A new CNN poll finds 75% of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters want the party to nominate someone other than President Joe Biden in the 2024 election, a sharp increase from earlier this year.
The poll comes as Biden’s approval ratings remain low and most Americans are discontented with the state of the country and the economy. Inflation remains high and a new report released Tuesday showed consumer confidence slipped for the third straight month.
Twenty-four percent of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters said they want someone else because they don’t think Biden can win in 2024, up from 18% in a poll conducted in January and February. Thirty-two percent feel that way because they don’t want Biden to be reelected, up from 16% earlier this year. Twenty-five percent said they prefer Biden as the nominee, which is a steep drop from 45% in January/February.
It’s sort of a split between thinking Biden can’t win in 2024 or simply not wanting Biden to win in 2024. In other words, he’s lost on both accounts. Voters might still give him a chance if they liked his policies and felt he was doing good things in the country even if he faced an uphill climb.
As it stands today, with the U.S. economy likely now officially entering recession territory, Biden doesn’t have much to stand on in terms of accomplishments.
The CNN poll is not an outlier in terms of Democrats feeling sour about a potential Biden re-election bid:
The CNN poll was released the same day as a new Granite State Poll from the University of New Hampshire that shows just 31% of New Hampshire Democrats want Biden to run for reelection and that 59 do not want him to run again. In June, 54% of New Hampshire Democrats said they did not want him to run again.
The CNN poll is looking at voters nationwide while the University of New Hampshire poll only focused on Democratic voters in the granite state. If Biden can’t hold enthusiasm among early primary voters, it’s another sign that he’s more likely than not to remain a single-term president.
The same CNN poll also found a slight majority of Republicans would prefer someone other than Donald Trump in 2024:
The poll also showed a majority of Republican and Republican-leaning registered voters say they do not want former President Donald Trump to be their party’s nominee in the 2024 presidential election. Fifty-five percent say they want someone else other than Trump to be the nominee, which is up from 49% in a January/February poll.
Trump’s still rolling with roughly half of the Republican primary electorate still supporting another presidential run. The GOP is more open to a Trump 2024 run than Democrats are open to a Biden 2024 run is what it basically comes down to.
If Biden doesn’t run, who do Democrats prefer? Believe it or not, Vice President Kamala Harris is still in the mix as is California Gov. Gavin Newsom:
A NewsNation-Decision Desk HQ poll released on Thursday found that 31 percent of Democrats surveyed would most prefer Harris as the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee if Biden doesn’t run, followed by 17 percent who chose Newsom.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who caucuses with Democrats and was Biden’s closest competitor for the nomination in 2020, received 13 percent support, followed by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who had a surprisingly strong showing in the 2020 race, at 10 percent.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) each received less than 10 percent.
Biden’s political career may not be ending until 2024 but it appears most of his voters are already moving on to practically anyone else.
