Paxton’s appearance with Trump will draw particular attention after leaked audio recently captured the Republican Senate nominee discussing the effect Trump’s Dallas convention had on his polling. Paxton said that after the convention, “everybody’s numbers dropped.” When asked during the same conversation whether Trump was currently a drag on his campaign, Paxton responded, “Right now, yeah.”

The episode added another twist to what has already become an unexpectedly difficult Senate race for Republicans in Texas. Despite the awkward exchange, Trump has continued campaigning for Paxton and urging Texas Republicans to support him in November. Now the two are scheduled to share the stage in San Antonio.

The Senate contest has become one of the more closely watched races of the midterms. Recent public polling has repeatedly shown a tight contest between Paxton and Democrat James Talarico, while substantial outside spending has poured into the race.

San Antonio is also important to the battle for the House. The region includes competitive congressional territory, giving Trump’s visit significance beyond the statewide Senate contest as both parties fight for control of Congress.

Wednesday’s rally follows Trump’s recent campaign stops in Oklahoma, Alabama, Ohio and Nebraska as the president steps up his travel during the final month before Election Day.
