California, not usually a state that matters much in GOP presidential primary races, is making a rule change that could influence the eventual outcome of the race for the 2024 Republican nomination. A new rule change, however, could make the state more attractive for candidates. As a result, as KCRA reports, Trump is not the only candidate descending on the state this week:

The path to the Republican Presidential nomination will run through California this week.

Former President Donald Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy are just a few of the several making a swing through the Golden State.

“We can play a really influential role in this presidential nomination process,” said California GOP Chairwoman Jessica Millan Patterson, who noted California Republicans are looking forward to hearing candidate pitches on issues affecting the state including crime, homelessness, and education. “I think if these candidates are smart, they will talk about what’s happening here in California.”

California is uniquely positioned this year to potentially determine the Republican nominee. The state has its primary in March and has more delegates than any other with 169. The party voted to change its rules this year that allow the candidate who receives more than 50% of the vote the winner of all of the 169 delegates, as opposed to dividing up the share based on the share of the vote.

The eventual Republican presidential nominee will end up needing an estimated 1,234 delegates.

Days after the debate, candidates will speak directly to delegates and voters at the California GOP convention in Anaheim running from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1. Trump is expected to kick off the high-profile speeches with a lunchtime keynote address on the 29.

The rule change for the California GOP primary delegate process is noteworthy and will create more interest in the state for candidates this year. The delegate award will only matter, however, if the primary is actually close next year into March when California Republicans have their chance in the voting booth.
