Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis launched his 2024 presidential campaign on Wednesday during a glitch-filled Twitter Spaces interview with Elon Musk.

For those curious, Twitter Spaces is a voice-chat feature on Twitter allowing users to join a room, of sorts, and then converse with one another.

The event taking place later today will feature Musk, the owner and current Twitter CEO, as the moderator of a discussion with DeSantis about his future plans:

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to announce his run for president on Wednesday during a Twitter Spaces event alongside Twitter’s Executive Chairman Elon Musk.

During a Wall Street Journal event on Tuesday, when asked if he was hosting a discussion with DeSantis, Musk confirmed the event.

“I will be interviewing Ron DeSantis and he has quite an announcement to make,” Musk teased.

He went on to highlight the role Twitter will play on Wednesday.

“It will be the first time something like this is happening on social media and with real time questions and answers,” Musk said. “Not scripted. So it’s going to be live and let ‘er rip. Let’s see what happens.”

In response to the news, a Trump-supporting super PAC mocked the impending announcement as “out of touch” and a “niche campaign”:

Trump’s super PAC mocked DeSantis’ choice of venue for his announcement, calling it “one of the most out-of-touch campaign launches in modern history.”

“The only thing less relatable than a niche campaign launch on Twitter, is DeSantis’ after party at the uber elite Four Seasons resort in Miami,” MAGA Inc. said in a statement Tuesday.

DeSantis will enter the field down a good 40 points to Trump depending on the poll but a lot of people haven’t started paying attention yet. It’s possible his entrance to the race will improve the numbers somewhat, but can he overcome this massive deficit? Internally, the DeSantis team must see a path or they wouldn’t be plowing forward.

It is not without irony that Donald Trump used to be the “King of Twitter” before his account was unceremoniously banned after the events of January 6, 2021, but now DeSantis is using the venue in cooperation with one of the platform’s loudest voices to launch his presidential ambitions.

Back in June of last year, Musk openly praised DeSantis as someone he was leaning toward and said he could be more capable of winning than Andrew Yang, his previous choice:

The event is set to take place around 6 pm ET. To listen to the announcement live, use the link above or join via Twitter at DeSantis’ feed or likely from the feed of Elon Musk.
