The lone congressional seat in the state is open after decades with the passing of longtime incumbent Rep. Don Young, and Palin is locked in a four-way runoff battle to be decided on August 16.

Trump was also on the ground to support Kelly Tshibaka who is currently in a primary battle to oust incumbent Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski, a frequent Trump critic.

Trump will primarily be visiting on behalf of Palin and Tshibaka, two candidates he has fully endorsed in their congressional and senate races.

While Sarah Palin advanced past the very crowded early primary stage, she’s facing a tougher battle in the four-way primary runoff with polls showing a tight field.

The decision to use ranked-choice voting in the primary also means that a candidate must win 50% support before a winner can be declared:

Recent statewide polling indicates that Sarah Palin may not have as much traction as she expects in the race to fill Don Young’s seat in Congress.

Likewise, a decision by a top contender to leave the race could prove advantageous to Palin’s Democratic challenger, Mary Peltola.

Despite coming in first in the special primary, Sarah Palin was not widely supported in the poll. In fact, she showed pronounced negative favorability of almost 44-percent. That put her behind both Democrat Mary Peltola by 11 points, and one point behind Republican Nick Begich III, in the first round of a speculative ranked-choice ballot, which Alaskans will be using for the first time in the special election on August 16.

In a second round, with Palin eliminated, respondents gave Alaska’s vacant congressional seat to Begich, with 57-percent of the vote.

In the race to unseat Lisa Murkowski, Tshibaka still has a chance but polling indicates the incumbent is still the favorite in the race, again with a ranked-choice primary system:

Tshibaka is seeking to oust Murkowski, one of the seven Republican senators who voted to convict Trump after he was impeached by the House of Representatives for inciting his supporters to attack the U.S. Capitol.

Recent polling by Alaska Survey Research suggests that the incumbent Republican is still favored to win in the state’s ranked-choice voting system. Although the Trump-backed candidate came out ahead in the first and second round of counting in the survey, Murkowski was ultimately the winner with just over 52 percent support as other less popular contenders were eliminated. The poll was conducted from July 2 to 5.

Both Alaska primary races will be decided on August 16 when Trump’s endorsement track record will once again be put to the test.
