Convention History
2024 will mark the first year the Republican Party has chosen to hold its national convention in the state of Wisconsin. Having previously taken place in Ohio, in 2016, and North Carolina, in 2020, the upper midwest has become a battleground for both parties after the realignment under former President Donald Trump.
The city of Milwaukee beat out several other finalists competing for the privilege of holding the 2024 GOP convention. Other finalists included the cities of Nashville, Salt Lake City, Pittsburgh, and Kansas City. Ultimately, the decision was made to hold the convention in Milwaukee as a nod to the rust belt and an indication that the GOP hopes to remain competitive there in future election cycles.
Milwaukee was also the site of the 2020 Democratic National Convention making it the first city to hold consecutive conventions since New York City hosted both the 1976 and 1980 Democratic conventions.
