Convention History
The 2012 Democratic National Convention was held in Charlotte, North Carolina, and nominated President Barack Obama for his second term. The convention theme was “Americans Coming Together,” emphasizing the need for national unity and highlighting the president’s accomplishments in his first term. One of the most memorable moments of the convention was when former President Bill Clinton delivered a passionate speech endorsing Obama’s re-election.
The 2016 Democratic National Convention was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and nominated Hillary Clinton as the Democratic candidate for president. The convention theme was “Stronger Together,” emphasizing the party’s commitment to unity and inclusivity. The convention made history by nominating the first woman for president from a major political party. However, the convention was also marked by controversy, including protests by supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders and the release of hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee.
The 2020 Democratic National Convention was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic and nominated Joe Biden as the Democratic candidate for president. The convention theme was “Uniting America,” emphasizing the need for national unity and healing in the face of a divided country.
The last time Democrats selected Chicago for their national convention was in 1996 when President Bill Clinton was re-nominated to run for his second term.
