Trafalgar: Republicans Open 12-Point Lead in Midterm Congressional Ballot Poll

The 2022 midterm generic Congressional ballot polls have been all over the place lately, but with a fairly steady trend toward strong Republican chances of taking the House in November. Today, another data point to add from Trafalgar, a polling firm synonymous with correctly capturing former President Trump’s 2016 victory when no one else did.

The numbers for Democrats are grim with the GOP now leading by more than a dozen points when voters are asked which party should control Congress in the November midterm elections:

Republicans have opened up a substantial lead over Democrats ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, according to a new poll conducted in February among likely general election voters.

A poll from the Convention of States Action (COSA) in partnership with the Trafalgar Group showed Republicans enjoyed 54.4 percent support in the upcoming midterms, compared to just 41.9 percent for Democrats.

That represents a GOP lead of 12.5 percent over Democrats as the party is hoping to retake the House of Representatives and the Senate, allowing Republicans to stymie President Joe Biden’s agenda.

A true 12.5% percentage lead for Republicans would be well beyond a historic blowout, so perhaps capping this by a few points is prudent without calling it an outlier. Still, given how low Biden’s approval is going, and how uneasy Americans are feeling about the economy and now chances of war in Ukraine, it’s potentially understandable that Democrats are being roundly rejected.

Polling data must be getting so bad that Democrats in the Senate are talking about temporarily removing the federal tax on gasoline. That would be akin to giving the oil companies subsidies to make their product appear cheaper, something that left-wing progressives in the Democratic base won’t be thrilled about.

There isn’t much Biden can do other than abandon his anti-fossil fuel energy policy to decrease gas prices in the short term. Senate Dems are trying to perhaps bail him out and give the appearance of caring about inflation.

That’s the other problem for Democrats, they just don’t appear to care much about rising costs in every part of the economy. Biden has largely ignored the problem at hand by placing blame on Congress for not passing his Build Back Better spending bill. His assertion is that passing the bill would drive down costs in other areas of life, so expensive gas and groceries wouldn’t sting as much. No one seems to buy that claim.

So, Democrats are stuck here, trying to accomplish anything that looks like it could ease inflation and appear as if they do indeed care about kitchen table issues like the cost of gas and groceries.

Seriously, though, how bad must it be for Biden and Democrats around the country that in the span of a few weeks, they’re dropping Covid mandates all over the place and now want to have a gas tax holiday? Their polling must truly be in the dumpster next to Kamala Harris’ political career.
