Within the 2024 GOP primary, the most recent survey of the race puts Trump quite far ahead of the pack with the latest numbers from Emerson College Polling pegging the former president’s support nearing a super majority:

For the Republican nomination, former President Donald Trump’s support in the hypothetical Republican primary is at 62%, followed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis at 16%. No other candidate reaches double digits. Trump’s 62% reflects an increase in support for the first time in an Emerson national poll since June 2022, where he has held a consistent 55%. Since the February national poll, DeSantis has lost nine points of support, from 25% to 16%.

Here’s the accompanying chart from Emerson with a breakdown of the entire field:

Most notable in the Emerson numbers is that DeSantis has lost nine points since their previous survey back in February.

The good news for DeSantis is that he isn’t formally in the race yet which means he has a lot of upside potential. However, the behemoth that is the Trump campaign still looms large over the GOP electorate and clearly commands a sizable lead right from the starting gate.
