What to expect?

Look for Nikki Haley to continue her attempt at unseating DeSantis from the second-place position in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. As it stands now, DeSantis’ position has been softening while Haley has consolidated some establishment donor class support. DeSantis will need more than a night of coasting along, he’ll need to convince donors and the anti-Trump voting faction that he has the best shot at winning in Iowa and toppling Trump in the primary.

However, nothing up to this point seems to have moved the needle. DeSantis and Haley both need Trump voters to peel away from the former president if they see any chance of scoring an early primary victory. While there have been signs of shifts in Iowa and New Hampshire, nothing seismic has altered the race and eaten into Trump’s double-digit lead.

This debate will primarily be a Haley-DeSantis battle since neither Chris Christie nor Vivek Ramaswamy have any serious shot at the nomination.

It will be refreshing to see a debate held somewhere other than Fox News or a mainstream liberal outlet like NBC News. NewsNation is an up-and-coming cable network and the decision to place Megyn Kelly back in the moderator chair, opposite of the first two Fox debates, could wind up being a brilliant move.
