NY Times: Merrick Garland Lied to Congress About Hunter Biden

There is no better-protected individual in Washington than Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden.

Just recently, a sweetheart deal with the Justice Department was announced which would essentially absolve Hunter Biden’s crimes with little more than a slap on the wrist.

Among the charges, which included trafficking an illegal firearm and various tax fraud allegations, Hunter will essentially pay a fine and be on his way:

Hunter Biden has reached a deal with federal prosecutors to resolve a five-year federal investigation into his failure to pay about $1 million in federal taxes and his purchase of a handgun in 2018.

Under an agreement detailed Tuesday in a filing in federal court in Delaware, President Joe Biden’s son will plead guilty to a pair of misdemeanor tax charges. Prosecutors have also charged him with possessing a firearm while being a user of illegal drugs — a felony — but have agreed to dismiss that charge if he completes a two-year period of probation.

However, a handful of whistleblowers within the FBI and Justice Department have alleged that prosecutors wished to pursue other charges and indictments but were shut down at the hands of the Department of Justice, perhaps at the behest of President Biden.

During testimony before Congress, Attorney General Merrick Garland swore under oath that there was no political interference with the Hunter Biden prosecution, a claim which seems patently absurd on its face given how minimal the repercussions and punishment will be for such serious crimes. Anyone not named “Biden” would wind up in prison for years.

This is where the interference comes in by the Justice Department.

David Weiss, the U.S. attorney overseeing the case in Delaware purportedly wanted to bring more charges against Hunter Biden but needed Justice Department approval to move outside his jurisdiction in the state of Delaware.

According to a New York Times report on the matter, Weiss was blocked repeatedly from doing so, a fact that has now been corroborated by multiple sources and flies in the face of Garland’s sworn testimony:

But in mid-2022, Mr. Weiss reached out to the top federal prosecutor in Washington, Matthew Graves, to ask his office to pursue charges and was rebuffed, according to Mr. Shapley’s testimony.

A similar request to prosecutors in the Central District of California, which includes Los Angeles, was also rejected, Mr. Shapley testified. A second former I.R.S. official, who has not been identified, told House Republicans the same story. That episode was confirmed independently to The New York Times by a person with knowledge of the situation.

While Mr. Weiss had the authority to pursue leads that led to jurisdictions other than his own in Delaware, the department’s practices dictated that he secure the approval and cooperation of the U.S. attorneys in those districts before proceeding.

The “Mr. Shapley” referred to by the Times is Gary Shapley, an I.R.S official who oversaw the agency’s investigation of Hunter Biden’s taxes. Shapley has claimed that his criticism of how the case was handled brought him retaliation within the agency when he spoke up with his concerns.

The paragraphs in bold are the key text of this story where the Times admits that not only were requests to pursue further prosecution rejected but the story has been corroborated by multiple sources within the federal bureaucracy. All of this would directly contradict claims from Garland that Weiss, the prosecuting attorney in Delaware, had complete autonomous control in charging whatever crimes the evidence supported.

In other words, the Biden administration, via the Department of Justice and the I.R.S., worked overtime to sweep Hunter Biden’s crimes under the rug and minimize the potential of investigations or charges being brought against the wider Biden family.

The entire episode stinks of corruption within the Biden administration and various federal agencies working to protect the Biden family from a growing cacophony of scandals threatening to engulf the White House.

UPDATE

CBS News aired an interview with Gary Shapley which better details the various ways investigations into Hunter Biden were shut down to avoid implicating President Biden:
