Full Video: New York Governor Debate Between Kathy Hochul and Lee Zeldin (Oct. 25)

Alongside the Fetterman and Oz battle in Pennsylvania tonight, the two candidates for New York Governor also participated in a debate on Tuesday evening. The Republican nominee, Rep. Lee Zeldin, faced off against incumbent Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul.

This race for months seemed like a dead end for Zeldin given the state’s deep blue makeup but recent polls have put him in contention for a potential upset in November. Here are all the details on tonight’s one and only New York Governor debate including how to watch and stream it online.

This will be the only debate between the two candidates:

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and her opponent Rep. Lee Zeldin will square off on Tuesday evening in their only scheduled debate, which comes as the latest round of polls suggest the Republican challenger rapidly closing in on the Democratic incumbent’s once-formidable lead.

Hochul and Zeldin, a Republican congressman from eastern Long Island, are scheduled to debate for an hour at 7 p.m. in a debate hosted by Spectrum News at Pace University’s Manhattan campus.

The debate comes at a key point in the race, with just four days until early voting begins and exactly two weeks until Election Day.

As we’ve previously noted, Hochul is in a very vulnerable position as an incumbent. She’s finishing out a term she inherited from the disgraced Andrew Cuomo and has never been able to fully build a solid coalition of support. Furthermore, with rampant issues around the state, and especially the crime rates in New York City, Hochul has proven to be inept at addressing the concerns of voters.

As the Gothamist notes, crime will be a huge topic tonight as it’s been a cornerstone issue of the campaign and the reason for Zeldin’s insurgent candidacy:

One of these topics is crime. Zeldin, like many Republicans nationwide, has made it the center of his entire campaign, highlighting increases in rapes, robberies, and felony assaults in New York City and beyond. (Murders and shootings, meanwhile, are down year to year in the five boroughs, according to NYPD data.) Zeldin has also said he would declare a state of emergency on crime, which would allow him to temporarily suspend the state’s bail laws if he were to be elected. He’s also pledged to use his gubernatorial power to fire Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

The fireworks start at 7 pm ET tonight and can be watched live at the stream links above.
