While many other potential 2016 contenders already offered their view on the Syrian conflict, Hillary Clinton had been quiet until now.

Report from MediaBistro:

In her first public comments on the crisis since President Barack Obama proposed military action in response to Syria’s use of chemical weapons, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called the Russian offer to remove Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s weapons an “important step,” but warned that Russia must demonstrate its sincerity to the international community.

“If the regime immediately surrendered its stockpiles to international control, as was suggested by Secretary [John] Kerry and the Russians, that would be an important step,” Clinton said. “But this cannot be another excuse for delay or obstruction. Russia has to support the international community’s efforts sincerely, or be held to account.”

Clinton also defended Obama’s push for strikes as instrumental in making such a political settlement possible.

“It is very important to note that this discussion that has taken hold today, about potential international control over Syria’s stockpiles, only could take place in the context of a credible military threat by the United States to keep pressure on the Syrian government as well as those supporting Syria, like Russia,” she said.

“Achieving a political solution that ends the conflict is in the interest of the United States,” Clinton concluded. “It will require an intense diplomatic effort, guided by the road map that was agreed to by the international community in Geneva, last year, in June of 2012. There was an agreement we hammered out that pointed the way forward. We need to get to the opportunity to begin such negotiations to move toward a resolution.”

She’s attempting to sound like the most experienced, responsible person in the room right now. Did she succeed?

  1. I think it’s striking that her comments were made AT the White House. It’s not like she’s trying to upstage Obama. And there was this, last week:

Hillary Clinton backs Obama to seek approval on Syria

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is backing President Obama’s efforts to seek congressional approval on the use of military force in Syria.

“Secretary Clinton supports the president’s effort to enlist the Congress in pursuing a strong and targeted response to the Assad regime’s horrific use of chemical weapons,” says a statement from a Clinton aide sent to USA TODAY. The aide was not authorized to speak publicly.

This is Clinton’s first comment on Obama’s call to action on Syria. While she was in Obama’s Cabinet, Clinton and then-CIA Director David Petraeus had proposed arming and training Syrian rebels but their idea was rejected.

    ==========

And it’s not like we didn’t know how Hillary sees Syria:

–“Look, Assad’s going to be gone; it’s just a question of time. What we hope is that they avoid a civil war, that they avoid greater bloodshed, that they make the changes that they should have been making all along. And we think the Arab League pressure is probably the most effective pressure.” – November 2011

    — “Faced with a neutered Security Council, we have to redouble our efforts outside of the United Nations with those allies and partners who support the Syrian people’s right to have a better future.” – February 5, 2012

–“The longer you support the regime’s campaign of violence against your brothers and sisters, the more it will stain your honor,” Clinton said at a press conference in Morocco. “If you refuse, however, to prop up the regime or take part in attacks on your fellow citizens, your countrymen and women will hail you as heroes.” – February 26, 2012

    — “Assad must go.” – April 1, 2012

–“The regime sponsored violence that we witnessed again in Hama yesterday is simply unconscionable. Assad has doubled down on his brutality and duplicity.” – June 7, 2012

    — “We are dealing with not only a murderous regime in a combustible region, but the potential for that region to be gravely affected by the continuance of this violence. But the stakes of inaction by the international community are just too high. If Syria spirals further into civil war, not only will more civilians die, not only will more refugees stream across the borders, but instability will most certainly spill into neighboring states.” – June 30, 2012

–“If people like him, and like the generals and colonels and others who have recently defected to Turkey are any indication, regime insiders and the military establishment are starting to vote with their feet.” – July 6, 2012

    — “History will judge this council,” she said of the United Nations Security Council. “Its members must ask themselves whether continuing to allow the Assad regime to commit unspeakable violence against its own people is the legacy they want to leave.” – July 13, 2012

–“I can’t put a definite hour and minute on it, but the Assad regime is not going to survive. I just wish it would end sooner instead of later…That would be the best signal we could send to Assad that his days are numbered.” – July 17, 2012

The one thing a fence sitter succeeds in is getting a sore crotch….

  3. It’s too late – 30% of Rebels in Syria come from outside and are al Qaeda types and increasing daily. Stay out of Syria stay out the whole middle east. Clinton’s quotes were all from 2012 and probably directed by Obama. All of her thoughts comes from the Party, the Administration or her ol’ Man. B.O. doesn’t support Assad, not because he’s a butcher or a possible gasser / chem wmd but because he is basically secular.

We are not the world’s police or conscience. let Russia try again to become the “control” in the Middle-East. They tried from ’79 -> ’89 and came out whipped like the U.S. from ’02 -> ’14.

Simply put the word out – “we are tired of war! – leave us alone and settle your own differences” Try anything at all and we will rain a holocaust on the perpetrators, we have every imaginable WMD. We have Submarines no one knows about, Aircraft Carriers everyone knows about, and Stealth Bombers no one can see. All we want is peace, free lawful trade, and market business relationships.

    • samreusser — correct.

That’s what the people want…but not what the government desires.

It is obvious to all, that have a functioning brain, that NO Islamic nation is a direct military threat to our homeland (being five thousand miles way from US). However, they are a definite and DIRECT threat to Israel, so such Islamic countries need to be dis-stabilized in order to protect Israel (and only Israel) — none are a military threat to even European nations (which are much closer).

Are terrorists a threat — sure, but why would a few dozen muslim extremists that may come over here and cause negligible harm (compared to an all out war) on our homeland, BECOME the guiding force of our ENTIRE Foreign Policy? That is simply CRIMINAL Behavior by the Ones that have been elected in Office — to change our American Way of Life because of a few nuts.
      ———————————————————————————————-

The logical conclusion is that when Israel whistles, the US starts bombing.

I’m afraid that Israel’s call to arms has not been heeded by the US presidency right away — but soon they’ll whistle louder, and more American lives will be lost to protect that foreign nation!

  4. Putin checkmated Obama (and his barking-only dog Kerry)! WOW!!! That was such a simple finesse that any decent Chess Player would have foreseen — but, obviously not the mental defects that are Obama and Kerry.
    ——————————————————————————————–

How did these two clowns (Obama and Kerry) embarrass our nation, making us the laughing stock of the world? Here is the chronological order of their stupidities:

Obama draws a “red line” if Chem weapons are used — and states USA will bomb Syria to stop this.

Chem weapons are used — Obama declares (without positive proof that it was Assad, and not the terrorists themselves), along with British Prime Minister Cameron’s acceding, that the World’s Opinion must be respected and the USA will start bombing Syria along with the “International Community”….

Cameron is ready to bomb along with Obama, but then British Parliament says NO!

Now Obama is IN SHOCK, and on his own — he still pushes for bombing Syria — but is afraid to do it on his own volition (for the obvious political backlash)! So, NOW Obama (who had previously declared that he does not need Congressional approval to start a ‘limited’ War) NOW BACKPEDALS AND asks Congress to approve his war desires, and sends Kerry to Europe to muster some support for his Bombing Syria right away!

Kerry arrives and makes a fool of himself in France — when asked: “What would stop the US from bombing Syria” he answers: “Assad must turn over all his Chem Weapons”.

The Russians pounce on it immediately and state they will assure this!

Then, poor idiot Kerry says it was a “rhetorical answer” and not one he, and Obama, were willing to accept.

Too late — Obama’s rep, Kerry-the-idiot, opened his mouth and played right into Putin’s hands.

Now, Putin (the swine) won and Kerry and Obama look like the village idiots that they are!

Obama, and his toothless barking dog Kerry, have achieved what no other Administration since Jimmy Carter has done — make US look weak and STUPID!

    p.s. forgot to add —

Impeach Obama, and put Kerry next to Lil’ Hussein’s prison cell…so the two can play the simple game of Chinese Checkers… with each other…..
