Blakeman’s appearance with Trump comes as he tries to gain ground against Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul. A new Marist poll released this week has Hochul leading Blakeman 53% to 42% among registered voters statewide, but the regional numbers show a more divided electorate. Blakeman leads 51% to 44% Upstate and also holds an advantage among independents, while Hochul runs far ahead in New York City.
The same poll found Trump deeply underwater statewide, with 38% approving of his job performance and 60% disapproving. That creates an interesting political balance for Blakeman, who is embracing Trump’s support while trying to improve his margins outside the heavily Republican parts of the state.
Friday’s rally also gives Republicans another opportunity to focus on affordability, taxes and energy costs, issues Blakeman has emphasized throughout the campaign. Recent polling has found significant concern among New Yorkers about household finances, with 40% in the Marist survey saying their family’s financial situation has worsened over the past year.
The Syracuse stop continues Trump’s aggressive final-month campaign schedule. He has recently appeared in Oklahoma, Alabama, Ohio, Nebraska and Texas while campaigning for Republican Senate, House and gubernatorial candidates ahead of Election Day.
