While the UAW leadership continues to criticize Trump, it’s the rank-and-file union members who supported him in 2016 and will likely do so again in 2024. The economy under President Biden has been abysmal for workers of all stripes with inflation eating into wages up and down the board.

As Axios reports, however, the UAW has yet to formally endorse Biden in the race despite backing him in 2020:

The UAW has yet to endorse Biden for re-election after backing him in 2020. Fain said Biden has to earn the powerful union’s endorsement, and that its members expect “action, not words.”

Biden, who describes himself as the “most pro-union president” ever, urged the U.S. automakers last week to share more of their profits with striking union workers to bring a quick end to the historic labor walkout.

What they’re saying: “President Trump is on the side of American workers and always will be,” a Trump campaign spokesperson said in an emailed statement on Tuesday night.

The spokesperson did not address Fain’s criticism of the former president, but said that Biden and the Democrats had taken auto workers “for granted and that’s why President Trump is ahead in the polls.”

Nobody views Joe Biden as some kind of savior for union households or non-union households, he’s the furthest thing from “working class” that you can find in Washington. In short, Biden’s shtick has worn thin to the point that few take him seriously any longer on issues of the economy or even with labor disputes. He’s a non-entity on the sideline.

Speaking in Detroit offers Trump a platform and an opportunity to talk about household economic issues once again and remind everyone about the booming economy during his first term.
