Much is being written about DeSantis and Trump holding what are essentially dueling rallies in Florida on the same day. Politico is reporting that DeSantis wasn’t invited to Trump’s rally, but also that he didn’t ask to attend:

Former President Donald Trump will hold a rally Sunday in Miami as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is campaigning at competing events hundreds of miles away, exposing the simmering tension between two potential political rivals just days before the midterm election.

Multiple people familiar with the planning around Trump’s rally, which will feature Sen. Marco Rubio and is part of a four-city tour, said DeSantis wasn’t invited and didn’t ask to attend. Underscoring the perceived slight, DeSantis’ campaign declared that the governor will tour 13 Florida cities in the remaining days of the 2022 midterms, including three on Sunday, just days after Trump announced his gathering.

“They did not invite Ron, which I do think was stupid,” said one of the Republican consultant with knowledge of the rally’s planning. “Why not try and avoid the appearance of the fight? But in their defense, I don’t know that he would have come even if he was invited.”

DeSantis is on his way to what is likely a high double-digit blowout victory over Democrat Charlie Crist. He doesn’t necessarily need Trump’s help or endorsement in the race. If he were to attend the rally, it would be more of a show of unity between the two likely 2024 rivals. The real question is how much thought was given to excluding DeSantis from the invitation list. Perhaps it was assumed that DeSantis might turn it down since he’s on his own barn-storming tour of the state. That scenario would create a “DeSantis snubs Trump” media cycle that both would prefer to avoid.

As noted, DeSantis is holding several events on Sunday as well in the lead-up to Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Will DeSantis’ name come up during the rally? It’s possible. The event will kick off at 2 pm ET with Trump expected to take the stage around 5 pm ET. Follow the Trump rally schedule for more details and videos of all the previous rallies.
