Republicans Running for President in 2024: The Surprising List so Far

The race for the 2024 presidential election is already gaining momentum with several prominent Republicans vying for their party’s nomination. As of this week, there will be ten declared candidates running for the 2024 Republican nomination.

1. Corey Stapleton
– Announced: Nov. 11, 2022
– Background: Former Montana Secretary of State from 2017 to 2021
– Political Experience: Previously served in the Montana Senate
– Key Policies: Focuses on limited government, protecting Second Amendment rights, and promoting conservative values

2. Donald Trump
– Announced: Nov. 15, 2022
– Background: Former President of the United States from 2017 to 2021
– Political Experience: First-time political novice when he ran for president in 2016
– Key Policies: Known for his “America First” approach, focusing on immigration reform, tax cuts, deregulation, and re-making the Supreme Court in a more conservative bent

3. Nikki Haley
– Announced: Feb. 14, 2023
– Background: Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations from 2017 to 2019 under President Trump
– Political Experience: Served as Governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017
– Key Policies: Advocates for a strong foreign policy, limited government intervention, and economic growth through tax reforms

4. Vivek Ramaswamy
– Announced: Feb. 21, 2023
– Background: Entrepreneur and biotech investor
– Political Experience: Running for office for the first time
– Key Policies: Emphasizes limited government, free-market principles, and regulatory reform, anti-woke, embraces many of Trump’s policies

5. Asa Hutchinson
– Announced: Apr. 2, 2023
– Background: Former Governor of Arkansas, serving from 2015 to 2023
– Political Experience: Previously served as a U.S. Representative and as Undersecretary of Homeland Security
– Key Policies: Known for his focus on criminal justice reform, economic development, and healthcare reform

6. Larry Elder
– Announced: Apr. 20, 2023
– Background: Conservative radio host and attorney.
– Political Experience: Unsuccessfully ran in the recall race of California Gov. Gavin Newsom
– Key Policies: Advocates for free market principles, limited government intervention, and individual liberties, considered to be a half conservative half libertarian

7. Tim Scott
– Announced: May 22, 2023
– Background: U.S. Senator from South Carolina since 2013
– Political Experience: Previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives
– Key Policies: Advocates for criminal justice reform, economic opportunity in underserved communities, and tax cuts

8. Ron DeSantis
– Announced: May 24, 2023
– Background: Current Governor of Florida, serving since 2019
– Political Experience: Previously served as a U.S. Representative from 2013 to 2018
– Key Policies: Strongly emphasizes conservative policies, such as tax cuts, pro-gun rights, and destroying wokeness

9. Mike Pence
– Announced: June 5, 2023
– Background: Former Vice President under President Donald Trump, served as Indiana’s governor from 2013 to 2017
– Political Experience: Served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2001 to 2013, Vice President from 2016 to 2020
– Key Policies: Known for his conservative stance on social issues, strong support for traditional values, and adherence to fiscal conservatism

10. Chris Christie
– Announced: June 6, 2023
– Background: Former Governor of New Jersey from 2010 to 2018, former presidential candidate in 2016
– Political Experience: Previously served as the U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey
– Key Policies: Advocates for fiscal responsibility, criminal justice reform, and basically running to defeat Donald Trump

It’s not yet clear if the field will round out at an even 10 or whether more Republicans will join the race sometime in the June/July timeframe. However, most analysts agree that getting in too late is already a disadvantage.
