Former President Donald Trump headed north on Saturday to the Granite State for a rally in the town of Durham. The event comes amid a slew of upcoming Trump rallies in early presidential primary states including Iowa and Nevada as well.

With Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis going all in Iowa, the state of play in New Hampshire presents a greater opportunity for the not-Trump candidates. Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley has been making moves in the state and is hoping to at least keep moving up in the field with a recent endorsement, according to USAToday:
Moments before, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu whipped the crowd into a frenzy with a high-energy speech endorsing Haley as his favored 2024 Republican.
“This isn’t just an aberration,” Sununu gushed about Haley’s mounting momentum in the first-in-the-nation primary state. “This is an opportunity for New Hampshire to lead the country, for New Hampshire to say we’re not looking in the rearview mirror anymore.”
Sununu, of course, was referring to former President Donald Trump. His hope is that the endorsement will help the former South Carolina governor whittle away at Trump’s mile-long lead in the race.
Recent polls have shown Haley as the top GOP alternative to the ex-president in New Hampshire, and a solid showing in the state’s upcoming primary could catapult her to success in other contests.
The fact that Sununu skipped over DeSantis to endorse Haley says more about DeSantis, I think. Sununu has decided to jump on the Haley bandwagon while the bandwagon is as hot as it’s going to get. Everyone outside of Trump is still essentially a sinking ship. Endorsing one deck chair over another on the Titanic still leads to the same conclusion.
As far as polling goes, Haley does have a shot at beating DeSantis and everyone but Trump in New Hampshire, but that’s likely where it ends:
UNH and CNN’s most recent New Hampshire poll, conducted at the beginning of November, showed the former South Carolina governor with 20% support among likely voters in the state, compared to Trump’s 40%. A Real Clear Politics average of polls found Haley fairing slightly worse, with 18.7% to Trump’s 44.3% in the New England state.
A 20-point deficit isn’t insurmountable, but if Trump wins Iowa, that 20 points will turn into 30 points overnight merely for the winning bandwagon effect.
New Hampshire sometimes takes a different path than Iowa when it comes to presidential primaries. Up north they like to say that Iowa picks corn, New Hampshire picks presidents. In other words, there have been many instances where the winner of the Iowa caucus does not go on to win the nomination or the presidency. The caucus system in general typically leads to a more confined swath of the voting electorate.
Either way, New Hampshire, like Iowa, is still Trump country.
